President Donald Trump said Monday he wants the Justice Department to pursue the harshest possible federal punishment—including the death penalty—against anyone responsible for abducting Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said those who took Guthrie “better return her alive” and confirmed he would support capital punishment if she is found dead.
The kidnapping case is entering its third week with no arrests. The sheriff said that all members of the Guthrie family, including their siblings and spouses, have been cleared as suspects in the kidnapping. In a post via X through PimaSheriff, Chris Nanos said that he wants to ask everyone to refrain from speculation that is “cruel” to the family.
According to updates from the sheriff’s office, all members of the family are cooperative and are victims in the case.
The authorities are also investigating a glove that was found by federal authorities about two miles from where Guthrie was last seen. The glove had unknown male DNA that matched the type of glove a masked suspect was seen wearing in a surveillance video, according to a Reuters report dated Feb 15.
The FBI said that a glove was mailed to a private lab in Florida by the sheriff’s office on Feb 12. The FBI also said that preliminary results from the lab were received by the FBI on Feb 14.
The FBI said that it is waiting for quality control and official confirmation before uploading the unknown male DNA to CODIS.
The FBI said that they believe that Guthrie was kidnapped by force last Jan. 31. However, she was not reported missing until Feb. 1, when she failed to attend church services.
