Trump to NYC’s Mamdani: ‘Be nice’ after ‘very angry’ victory speech

Trump calls Mamdani’s speech “very angry” and “dangerous” in Fox News interview.

President Donald Trump warned New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Wednesday to “be nice” following the Democrat’s election-night remarks, calling the speech “very angry” and “dangerous”. During an interview by Fox News’ Special Report, Trump added that Mamdani should be “a little bit respectful of Washington,” saying, “I’m sort of the one that has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he’s off to a bad start,” while also noting he wants the city to succeed.

Trump’s comments came after Mamdani used his election-night address to signal a combative stance toward federal pressure. “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,” the mayor-elect said.

Mamdani, 34, won Tuesday’s three-way race over independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. He campaigned on making things more affordable by protecting renters, offering free buses, and expanding child care. He has also said he will safeguard immigrant communities while working on reforms to make the public safer.

Trump, who has criticized Mamdani’s agenda and rhetoric, said the new mayor’s success will hinge on cooperation with the federal government. “I want to make the city succeed,” he said on Fox Special Report.
