President Donald Trump warned Monday that Iran would “pay for that killing many times over” whenever it killed an American soldier, saying he had directed military leaders to respond.
In a Truth Social post, Trump named Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Daniel Caine among those receiving the directive.

Seventeen U.S. service members have died since the war began Feb. 28, Reuters reported. The remains of another service member were being examined.
Later Monday, U.S. Central Command said American forces began a new round of strikes against Iran at 4 p.m. ET at the president’s direction.
CENTCOM said the operation was designed to weaken Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding on a ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, signed in June, collapsed in early July. Both countries have exchanged strikes since fighting resumed.
The national gasoline average reached $4 a gallon Monday, the Associated Press reported. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to 311.4 million barrels, its lowest level since March 1983, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration data.
