Trump Lands in Tokyo, Meets Emperor Ahead of Takaichi Talks

Trump Tokyo visit kicks off with an Imperial Palace meeting and high-stakes talks on defense and trade.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Tokyo on Monday evening to begin the second leg of his Asia tour, marking his first visit to Japan since 2019. According to Kyodo News, Trump met Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace shortly after landing at Haneda Airport, where crowds gathered to welcome him.

During the 30-minute meeting, the emperor was quoted by the Imperial Household Agency, as reported by Kyodo News, as hoping the visit would “further strengthen the friendly relations between Japan and the United States,” while expressing a wish for peace amid ongoing conflicts.

On Tuesday, Trump will meet Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for talks on trade, defense cooperation, and China’s regional posture. As reported by Kyodo News, Takaichi noted on X that Tokyo Tower and other landmarks were illuminated in red, white, and blue to honor the alliance.

Before landing, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he views Takaichi as “philosophically close” to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The leaders are expected to announce agreements on shipbuilding, critical mineral supply chains, and agricultural imports, according to government sources cited by Kyodo News.

Trump’s delegation includes Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who are meeting Japanese counterparts and business leaders such as SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son and Toyota’s Akio Toyoda. Trump is scheduled to continue his Asia tour in South Korea on Wednesday, reported Kyodo News.
