Trump says U.S. Navy will block ships in Strait of Hormuz after Iran talks stall on nuclear issue

Trump said talks in Islamabad ended without movement on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and set up a new maritime confrontation.

President Donald Trump said the United States would begin blocking ships trying to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz after talks with Iran in Islamabad failed to produce agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the meeting lasted nearly 20 hours and ended with broad agreement on most issues, but not on what he described as the central issue: Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Trump said that Iran was “unwilling to give up its nuclear ambitions” and that the US would “immediately” move ahead with a naval blockade. He also said that the U.S. Navy had been told to stop ships in international waters that paid what he called an illegal toll to Iran and to start destroying mines that he said Iran had put in the strait.

He said other countries would be involved in the blockade, though he did not identify them. Trump also said Iran had promised to keep the waterway open and failed to do so, causing disruption and fear among ship owners.

According to Trump, the U.S. side in the talks included Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. He said the meeting was held under the leadership of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and that U.S. and Iranian representatives were respectful during the talks but remained far apart on the nuclear issue.

Trump’s post also included sweeping claims about damage to Iran’s military and leadership. Those claims were not independently confirmed in the statement. He did not give a precise start time for the blockade, saying only that it would begin shortly.
