President Donald Trump said early on Sunday that the U.S. military had rescued the missing crew member from a fighter jet that had been shot down over Iran. He also said that everyone who took part in the mission came back safely.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the officer who was rescued is a colonel and had been in the mountains of Iran before U.S. forces brought him out. He said the officer was hurt but “will be fine.”
Trump said that the operation came after a rescue the day before that involved a second U.S. pilot. He said that the mission wasn’t confirmed at the time because officials didn’t want to risk the second rescue, which was crucial for ensuring the safety of the personnel involved.
Trump said that the military sent many planes to help. He also stated that no Americans sustained injuries or fatalities during either mission.
Trump called it one of the most daring search-and-rescue missions in U.S. history, and both pilots were found in separate missions inside enemy territory. Trump also said that the rescues showed what he called “overwhelming U.S. control of the skies over Iran.”
Trump did not name the officer or say exactly where or when the rescue happened. It also gave no details about the aircraft involved.
