Trump Recounts Xi Meeting, Jokes About ‘Discipline’ at White House

Trump’s White House anecdote follows his Oct. 30 Busan sit-down with Xi, their first in six years.

President Donald Trump talked about a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a White House breakfast. He said that Xi’s advisers showed a lot of discipline and power.

According to Trump, six staff members stood on each side of Xi, remaining completely still and upright throughout the exchange. When Trump addressed one of them, the aide didn’t respond, and Xi quickly moved the conversation along. “President Xi is very tough and very sharp,” Trump told attendees. “I’ve never seen people so scared in my life,” he added, according to reporters present.

Using the story to lighten the mood, Trump joked with Vice President J.D. Vance, telling him to “act like that” because he “keeps interrupting in the middle of conversations,” drawing laughter from the room.

The remarks came days after Trump met with Xi on October 30 in Busan, South Korea, marking their first in-person meeting in six years. The 100-minute discussion, as described by Trump, led to what he called productive agreements on issues including fentanyl cooperation, rare earth mineral discussions, and expanded Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans.
