President Donald Trump said Wednesday the United States will know within 48 hours where negotiations with Iran stand, speaking to reporters in Los Angeles before leaving for Las Vegas.
“We’re moving along very nicely,” Trump said of the talks. “We’ll know in 48 hours.”
Trump said Iran initiated the discussions. “They called and they said please, they want to talk,” he told reporters, adding that a lot of progress had been made.
Addressing questions from journalists regarding comments from Iran on the talks, Trump noted that Iran denied negotiating but secretly wanted to negotiate. “They deny that we’re negotiating. But they called,” he said. He said Iran wants a deal and does not want to be struck militarily.
Trump also promoted the economy during the remarks, saying the stock market had set new records in recent days and that trade and investment figures were strong.
