President Donald Trump on Monday threatened a much harsher U.S. response if Iran takes any action to disrupt oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, warning in a post on Truth Social that Tehran would be hit “TWENTY TIMES HARDER” than it has been so far. Trump also said the United States would strike targets that could make it “virtually impossible” for Iran to rebuild as a nation, though he added that he hoped such an escalation would not happen.

Trump’s warning came after Iran signaled possible retaliation if further attacks target energy infrastructure in the region. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, identified in multiple reports as a spokesman for Iran’s central military command, said Monday that oil prices could rise as high as $200 a barrel if Gulf states do not pressure the United States and Israel to halt attacks on regional energy facilities.
In his post, Trump also stated that keeping the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz “will be a gift to China and others, and many other countries, because we are keeping the Strait open.” The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil routes in the world, making any threat to the flow of oil through it a cause for concern.
