Trump Terminates U.S. Trade Negotiations With Canada Over ‘Fake’ Reagan Ad

Trump accuses Ontario of fraudulently editing Reagan’s 1987 speech on trade; Reagan Foundation confirms misuse.

President Donald Trump announced late Thursday that he has ordered the termination of all U.S. trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the Canadian government of releasing a fraudulent advertisement that misused footage of former President Ronald Reagan.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the Ronald Reagan Foundation had “just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.” He alleged the ad was produced for $75 million and designed “to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts.”

“The ad was for $75,000,000,” Trump wrote. “They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute confirmed in a statement that it had recently discovered the Government of Ontario created “an ad campaign using selective audio and video” from Reagan’s April 25, 1987 “Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade.”

According to the foundation, the edited version “misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address,” and the Ontario government “did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks.” The organization said it is reviewing its legal options and encouraged the public to view Reagan’s unedited remarks on its YouTube channel.

Canadian federal officials remain silent on Trump’s remark and on the Reagan Foundation’s assertion.
