Nine Days Before the Vote, Trump Backs Netanyahu in Israel

Trump tells Israelis Netanyahu "will never let you down" ahead of the Oct. 27 vote

WASHINGTON — Israel votes in nine days. On Sunday, President Donald Trump told Israelis who he wants to win, endorsing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election in a Truth Social post addressed to the people of Israel.

Trump’s post described Netanyahu as “a Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner for Peace in combatting the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its 51 year old chant, ‘Death to Israel, Death to America! We will destroy the Little Satan and the Big Satan,’”

Iran has been “systematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially,” Trump wrote, adding that “unless they change their ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job.”

He argued that if Israel chose anyone other than Netanyahu, the United States would have to do that work itself, and he was not inclined to do so. Netanyahu, he wrote, had not wilted under pressure and “maintains that same Strength today.”

“Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel. BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Netanyahu responded on X, thanking Trump for what he called an “extraordinary endorsement” and saying Israel has never had a greater friend in the White House.

“Together we will never let Iran’s regime get nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu wrote. “Thank you for your clarity, courage and unwavering support.”

The endorsement arrived late. Trump had held off until Sunday, according to CNN, telling Time earlier this month that he was not involved in Israeli politics anymore.

Israel will hold its national election on Oct. 27, its first vote since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, according to Reuters. The prime minister is chosen through coalition building in parliament, and Reuters reported that polls have suggested no candidate has a clear path to power.
