Trump Says Meeting With Xi Was a ‘Big Victory,’ Blasts New York Times

Trump says talks yielded purchases and tariff commitments; disputes NYT account.

President Donald Trump defended his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and accused The New York Times of misrepresenting it, according to a post on Truth Social on Friday evening.

Trump called the session with Xi a “spectacular SUCCESS,” saying China “pulled back” a rare-earths export threat, bought “billions of dollars” in U.S. soybeans and other farm goods, and “agreed to pay substantial tariffs.” Trump called Xi “a friend,” and said both sides left with “specific plans for future talks and meetings,” Truth Social said.

In the post, Trump attacked The New York Times and named reporters Lily Kuo and David Pierson, saying they “totally misrepresented the facts” and tried to “spin” the outcome negatively. He called the paper “fake news” and said the meeting was a “big victory for the U.S.A., and, indeed, the world,” Truth Social said.

Trump, in the posting, did not provide documents or data to bolster his assertions of Chinese purchases, tariff payments and policy shifts. The message was largely aimed at pushing back on the Times’ framing and at touting what he described as positive takeaways from the talks.
