President Donald Trump said he would not meet with congressional Democratic leaders to discuss averting a government shutdown, dismissing their demands as “unserious and ridiculous” in a lengthy post outlining his objections.
In the statement posted Tuesday on Truth Social, Trump accused Democrats of seeking more than $1 trillion in new spending for programs including health care for undocumented immigrants, transgender surgeries for minors and others. He claimed these policies would reopen borders, allow men in women’s sports and eliminate a $50 billion rural hospital fund he signed into law.
Trump wrote that Democrats “seem to have totally lost their way” and are pushing “Radical Left Policies that nobody voted for,” such as high taxes, open borders and no consequences for violent criminals. He tied his refusal to his recent election victory, which he described as a “HISTORIC LANDSLIDE” including all seven swing states and the popular vote.
The president expressed willingness to meet if Democrats “get serious about the future of our Nation” and agree to principles in his letter. “To the Leaders of the Democrat Party, the ball is in your court,” he concluded. “DO THE RIGHT THING!”
The post comes amid ongoing negotiations to fund the government beyond a looming deadline. As reported by Truth Social, Trump emphasized Republicans stand for “COMMON SENSE” and putting “America First,” contrasting with what he called Democratic efforts to “hold American Citizens hostage.”
Congressional Democrats have not immediately responded to the statement.
