President Donald Trump attacked former special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday, calling for him to be prosecuted. He posted on Truth Social while Smith testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the Trump investigations that yielded historic federal indictments.
Trump said Smith was “being DECIMATED before Congress” and called him “a deranged animal,” claiming Smith should no longer be a licensed attorney. In a second post, Trump demanded that Smith be prosecuted, accusing him of “large scale perjury,” though he provided no evidence.
Smith testified at a public oversight hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. Smith was questioned by the Republicans on how the investigation into Trump’s actions involving the mishandling of classified materials, his participation in the violation of events surrounding the election conducted in 2020, and the events leading to January 6, 2021, started and how they were conducted. The democrat members were present at the hearing to affirm the indictments and negate the claim that those in power do so for political reasons.
During the hearing, Smith defended his decisions as a prosecutor and said the cases were built on extensive witness testimony. He said investigators concluded Trump was not seeking “honest answers” about election fraud claims but was “looking for ways to stay in power,” and that Trump knew key fraud claims he promoted were false. Smith also said he had serious concerns about obstruction of justice and described what he said were efforts to intimidate witnesses, including threats directed at election workers.
Smith argued that Americans shouldn’t take the “rule of law” for granted since it “isn’t self-executing.” He said that it depends on everyone being willing to keep it, even when it costs them.
The two federal cases against Trump’s charges were dismissed when he returned to the Oval Office, in line with a long-standing policy of the Justice Department that says a sitting president cannot be prosecuted. Trump has said over and over that he did nothing wrong and that the investigations were politically motivated assaults. He said this again on Thursday when Smith was in front of legislators.
