President Donald Trump said Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, that he will raise U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports by an additional 10%, citing what he called a “fraudulent” Ontario-funded television ad that used Ronald Reagan’s remarks on trade. Trump announced the move in a post on Truth Social.
In the post, Trump said the ad misrepresented Reagan’s words and accused Canada of hoping the U.S. Supreme Court would “rescue” it on tariffs. He wrote that the spot aired during the World Series and called it a “hostile act,” adding that he is increasing tariffs “by 10% over and above what they are paying now.” He also said the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute objected to the ad’s use of audio and video and is “reviewing its legal options,” as stated on Truth Social.
Trump did not specify timing, the legal mechanism, or which products would face the extra 10%. No implementation details—such as an effective date or product list—were included in the Truth Social statement.
