NHC: Tropical Storm Fernand Forms as Caribbean Wave Organizes

NHC names Fernand and watches a quick-moving disturbance near the Windwards; rain and gusts possible Sunday into Monday.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its 8 p.m. EDT advisory that Tropical Storm Fernand formed Saturday evening several hundred miles south-southeast of Bermuda. In a different forecast, the center said that a tropical wave about 500 miles east of the Windward Islands is starting to organize and has a medium chance of developing over the next two days.

Fernand is now a named system that gets regular updates. As of Saturday night, there were no coastal watches or warnings for the United States, but officials told people to keep an eye on the news. Standard bulletins will give you information about the track and its intensity.

The disturbance known as AL99 is moving west at about 20 to 25 mph and firing deeper thunderstorms to the east of the islands, the NHC said. As it gets closer to and crosses the Windward and Leeward Islands late Sunday, forecasters said it could turn into a tropical depression in a day or two. Even if it doesn’t fully develop, there could be heavy rain and strong winds in some areas from Sunday to Monday.

Conditions are expected to get worse for further development by Tuesday, when the system reaches the central Caribbean. If needed, an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance flight is planned for Sunday. The center kept the odds of formation at 40% for 48 hours and 40% for seven days.

    NHC Recommendations :
The NHC recommends that People who live in or visit the Lesser Antilles should keep an eye on local weather and marine warnings. Tropical waves that move quickly can cause short storms, flooding on streets in low-lying areas, and quick changes in the sea state. People who live in these areas need to stay up to date and be ready for sudden changes in the weather. Emergency services say that you should have a plan and be ready to act on any alerts that come up.
