McConnell recognizes Biden as president-elect 6 weeks after the election

Top Republican Mitch McConnell said the ‘Electoral College – has spoken’.

“Many of us had hoped the presidential election would yield a different result,” he admitted on Tuesday.

“But our system of government has the processes to determine who will be sworn in on 20 January.”

McConnell described Democrat Mr Biden, who was vice president under Barack Obama and also a former senator himself, as someone “who has devoted himself to public service for many years”.

He also congratulated vice president-elect Kamala Harris, saying “all Americans can take pride that our nation has a female vice president-elect for the very first time”.

Before those remarks, he poured praise on President Trump’s “endless” accomplishments during the last four years.
