Tiger Woods Arrested on Suspicion of DUI After Crash Near Florida Home, Sheriff Says

Tiger Woods, a 15-time champion, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence following an accident near his home on Jupiter Island, Florida, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek. The sheriff said the accident happened at about 2 p.m. ET.

Budensiek said Woods, 50, was driving a Land Rover north on South Beach Road when he tried to pass a truck pulling a pressure cleaner trailer that had slowed to turn into a driveway. The sheriff said Woods’ SUV clipped the back of the trailer, rolled, and then slid on the driver’s side before stopping.

Neither Woods nor the other driver was hurt, the sheriff said. Woods was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI with property damage and for refusing to submit to a lawful test.

Budensiek said Woods got to jail around 3 p.m. and stayed there for eight hours, as required under Florida law. He said deputies carried out several roadside tests and took Woods’ past injuries and surgeries into account.

The sheriff said a breath test showed no sign of alcohol. According to him, Woods declined a urine test for additional drugs. Deputies at the scene did not think alcohol was a factor, and Budensiek said they believed some kind of medication or drug may have been involved. He also said no drugs or medications were found inside the SUV.

“He is cooperative, but he was not trying to incriminate himself,” Budensiek said, according to the report.

Budensiek said he could not comment on Woods’s driving speeds, but he noted that the speed limit on that road is 30 mph. He added that the crash could have ended much differently if another vehicle had been coming from the opposite direction.
