Trump Oversees Thailand–Cambodia Ceasefire at ASEAN Summit; Trade Deals Inked

ASEAN summit deal formalizes border de-escalation steps and opens a lane for displaced families to return.

U.S. President Donald Trump observed Thai-Cambodian ceasefire signing on Sunday on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, in a bid to halt deadly border clashes and open gates for displaced families to go back home, according to Reuters.

Leaders from the region characterized the deal—dubbed at the location the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords—as following up on a summer ceasefire and outlining plans to pull out heavy weapons, revitalize joint liaison groups, and resume military-to-military talks. The clashes along the border this spring left dozens dead and over 200,000 displaced, reports AP News.

Along with security, Trump announced new agreements on critical minerals and market access with Southeast Asian partners; Cambodia and Malaysia signed agreements while frameworks with Thailand and Vietnam moved forward. The White House billed the package as tariff relief for supply-chain cooperation and standards alignment, Reuters reported.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as well as Thai and Cambodian leaders, were present at the ceremony. Implementation details include timelines for withdrawals, demining support, and humanitarian access facilitated via ASEAN channels, AP News reported.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, separately, has indicated that he would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for the ceasefire initiative, Reuters reported earlier this year.

Commanders along the border have early benchmarks on weapons withdrawals and liaison staffing. Trump travels to Asia for security and trade talks later this week.
