Thailand, Cambodia Order Noon Ceasefire, Freeze Troops in Place After Border Clashes

Noon ceasefire freezes positions and launches a 72-hour observation window along the disputed border.

Thailand and Cambodia order a ceasefire at noon and keep their troops in place after fighting on the border.

According to the Bangkok Post, Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement on Saturday in Chanthaburi province.

The fighting stopped at noon, and troops were ordered to stay where they were on the present frontline.

Bangkok Post says that the agreement was signed at the Ban Phak Khat permanent border gate during a meeting of the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee.

The Thai Defense Minister, Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanit, and the Cambodian Defense Minister, Gen. Tea Seiha, were there.

General Nattaphon indicated that the first 72 hours will be a time to watch and make sure the truce persists.

The Royal Thai Army posted a separate field summary that listed the steps for the ceasefire in order: it starts at noon; both sides stay where they are along the frontline; no more soldiers are sent in; explosives and dangerous weapons are collected; and authorities will work together to fight scam networks.

The Army report indicated that the truce would last for 72 hours and that the first side to break it would end the deal.

The report claimed that if nothing else happens in the next 72 hours, Thailand would free 18 Cambodian soldiers it had captured.

The Bangkok Post said that the joint agreement also aims to let civilians in border areas go home as soon as feasible, while both sides work to make the disputed border stable.
