Two Killed, Eight Hospitalized After Shooting at Texas’s Apartment Party

Police said the gathering involved juveniles and young adults and had moved from another location before gunfire broke out.

A party at Texas’s Amarillo apartment complex turned deadly early Saturday morning. Two people were killed and eight others rushed to the hospital after a gunman opened fire, the Amarillo Police Department said.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. at Westminster Apartments in the 2400 block of South Coulter Street. The crowd was a mix of juveniles and young adults, police said. They had moved to that address from another location.

Police said their preliminary information indicates several people were asked to leave the original location. Those individuals later followed attendees to the Coulter location, attempted to enter an apartment and opened fire with a rifle-style weapon.

Two people were confirmed dead, police said. Multiple others suffered gunshot wounds.

ABC 7 also reported that eight others were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police did not say in the public release whether investigators believe one person or multiple people opened fire.

Steve Douglass, an ABC 7 photojournalist who lives several blocks from the scene, told the station he woke up to what he described as “machinegun fire,” followed by dozens of additional shots.

Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
