Türkiye unearths 4,500-year-old idols at Tavşanlı Höyük, minister says

Minister says seven figurines and Bronze Age ceramics were uncovered at Tavşanlı Höyük in western Türkiye.

On Monday, Türkiye’s culture minister revealed that archaeologists have found idols that are 4,500 years old at Tavşanlı Höyük in Kütahya province, which was a key Bronze Age hub in western Anatolia. Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the discovery on his social media site X. Ersoy posted, “We found idols made of marble, bone, and clay that are 4,500 years old.”

Ersoy said that seven idols in the shape of people were unearthed next to each other around a hearth. Researchers think that this arrangement can help us understand how people did rituals back then. He also said that the incomplete pottery found at the site should help us understand how things were made in the past.

The minister said that Tavşanlı Höyük was one of the biggest Bronze Age communities in western Anatolia and congratulated scientists and teams from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums (KÜVGM) for their work. Ersoy stressed that even if the digs were limited to small regions, the finds provide “unique clues” about the religious, cultural, and economic life of the time.

The minister said that fieldwork should go on until mid-December, and further discoveries are likely to be made as the season goes on. Local news sources also said that the group of seven figurines was important to the announcement, which showed how important the spot was for rituals.

According to previous reports on the discovery, Tavşanlı Höyük has made a number of important finds in recent years that show how important it is to studies of the Bronze Age in the area. Researchers will look at the items from Monday as the excavation goes on to see how they fit into the record
