“Even My Father”: Nepal PM Karki Vows Relentless Corruption Crackdown

After a Baluwatar meeting, Karki says long-stalled cases are back on the table and no one is off-limits.

VT Staff, KATHMANDU — Prime Minister Sushila Karki vowed sweeping action against corruption on Wednesday, saying her government will pursue offenders “with the same resolve” regardless of their standing and even if investigations point to her late father.

Speaking at a tripartite meeting at Baluwatar with government ministers, political parties and Gen-Z representatives, Karki framed the drive as part of a broader push for better governance, not merely an election effort. She said files long shelved are being reopened, arrests made and more detentions expected as probes continue.

Karki also defended her entry into politics, recounting calls from young activists and a sense of duty after witnessing victims of recent violence. “I saw those wounded and the families of the slain. I could not stand aside,” she said, according to Virginia Times.

The prime minister told attendees she is committed to addressing grievances of martyrs’ families and the injured, boosting police morale and capturing escaped detainees. She rejected claims of foreign interference, saying no outside actor has ordered Nepal’s government to take or avoid action.

On judicial questions and the controversy over parliament’s dissolution, Karki said practices differ abroad and urged critics not to block reforms. She acknowledged obstacles but promised to press ahead: officials will continue daily reviews of progress and work to restore public confidence, she added.
