Federal Agents Shoot, Kill Man in South Minneapolis; Protests Erupt

Minneapolis protests intensify after a fatal federal shooting as DHS and Minnesota leaders trade blame over the immigration crackdown.

A man was shot and killed by federal agents in south Minneapolis on Saturday morning, sparking new demonstrations and escalating a standoff between state and local authorities and the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement. Tensions then escalated as federal agents and demonstrators clashed between Nicollet Avenue and 26th Street, where the shooting occurred.

In a statement posted on X, the Department of Homeland Security said the confrontation began at 9:05 a.m. CT during a “targeted operation” in Minneapolis. DHS said an individual approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, and officers tried to disarm him. The department said the man “violently resisted,” and an agent fired what DHS called “defensive shots.” DHS said medics provided aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS also claimed the man had two additional magazines and no identification and said about 200 people later arrived and “obstruct[ed] and assault[ed]” law enforcement, prompting crowd-control measures.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a news conference that the man who died was a 37-year-old resident believed to be a U.S. citizen. O’Hara said the man appeared to be a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry, and that his only known prior interactions with law enforcement were traffic-related.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he spoke with the White House “after another horrific shooting by federal agents,” calling the situation “sickening” and demanding the operation end. In his post, Walz urged the president to pull federal officers out of Minnesota. Gov. Tim Walz on X.

Democratic leaders also escalated their criticism. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, in a post, urged the removal of federal immigration forces from the state. Sen. Amy Klobuchar on X. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, in a separate post, said the city had “lost another Minneapolis neighbor” and called on President Donald Trump to “get ICE out.”

Following a tragic shooting involving immigration enforcement earlier this month, Minneapolis is still on edge following the killing. The city has witnessed prolonged protests linked to the federal crackdown. Local authorities have warned that the increase has put a burden on public safety and stoked discontent.
