A military munition fell on a residential site in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Kharj governorate on Sunday, killing two people and injuring 12 others, according to an official statement from the Saudi Civil Defense.
According to the agency’s spokesman, the Civil Defense forces were dispatched to the area after the projectile landed on a residential area belonging to a maintenance and cleaning company. The statement also noted that the incident resulted in material damage to the area. The Saudi authorities reported that the two killed were Indian and Bangladeshi nationals. Additionally, the injured residents were all Bangladeshi nationals.
The spokesman also noted that any attempts to target civilian sites were a clear violation of international humanitarian laws. Moreover, the approved procedures were carried out.
Earlier Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had targeted radar systems in several locations, including Al-Kharj, according to Reuters. Saudi officials have not publicly assigned blame in the Civil Defense statement, but the strike came amid a broader wave of missile and drone attacks linked to the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Although the Saudi authorities did not point any fingers in their official statement from the Civil Defense spokesman, the incident comes at a time when various missile strikes in the region have been attributed to the Iran-U.S.-Israel conflict.
The Saudi authorities said that the impact point of the projectile was a residential area, not a military target.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing concern over cross-border attacks reaching populated areas inside Saudi Arabia. The Al-Kharj region is strategically significant as it is situated south of Riyadh. The region hosts various military installations in the country.
