Russian Drone Strikes Knock Out Power in Sumy and Other Ukrainian Cities

Hospitals lose power as Ukrainian officials confirm widespread drone damage across multiple regions

    Driving the news:

Russian forces launched another wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine on Saturday, severely affecting the city of Sumy and several other regions. The attacks disrupted electricity supply in Sumy and damaged critical infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials.

    Why it matters:

The July 13 attack is part of a larger escalation of Russia’s drone warfare campaign. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that over the past week alone, Russia has launched more than 1,800 drones, 1,200 guided bombs, and 83 missiles — a clear intensification of efforts to break Ukrainian resilience.

    What they’re saying:

“The enemy is striking objects of the city’s life support. Part of the city and critical infrastructure objects are without electricity,” — Serhiy Kryvosheienko, Head of Sumy City Military Administration.

Kryvosheienko confirmed that while emergency services are actively responding, “We are waiting for the restoration of the electricity supply.”

Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, stated that enemy drones were actively operating both in and around Sumy. One drone reportedly struck a critical infrastructure site.

“Part of the city was temporarily left without electricity. Some important institutions were switched to backup power supply,” Hryhorov noted, adding that specialists are working to restore normal power to homes.

Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar added that three hospitals in Sumy are currently without electricity due to the strikes.

    Wider impact:

The July 13 strikes extended beyond Sumy. According to Vadym Liakh, head of the Sloviansk city military administration, drones struck Sloviansk overnight, damaging residential buildings, a kindergarten, and a hospital. A 13-year-old boy was injured.

In Samar, located in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces targeted the local territorial recruitment center, according to RBC-Ukraine.

Kherson was also shelled overnight, injuring two civilians.

    What Zelensky said:

Ukrainian President Zelensky posted on X:

Seven days of large-scale Russian attacks on Ukraine: over 1,800 drones, more than 1,200 guided aerial bombs, and 83 missiles of various types… Interceptor drones are performing particularly well… “Shaheds” are one of Russia’s ways of prolonging the war. We must neutralize this threat in order to bring diplomacy into motion sooner.

    What to watch:

Zelensky urged partners in the U.S., Europe, and G7 to deliver stronger support and fulfill promises of defense aid. He emphasized the need for expanded drone defense technology to curb Russia’s aerial terror.
