Russia Says It Is Ready to Help Ease Middle East Tensions

Kremlin says Moscow can assist over Iran tensions, but denies Putin has taken on a formal mediator role.

Russia is prepared to help reduce tensions in the Middle East, but any meaningful progress will require broader agreement among the parties involved, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday, according to Xinhua.

Speaking to the press, Peskov stated that Moscow was ready to assist in the settlement of the tensions in the Middle East involving Iran “to the best of its ability.” However, he stated that this would need a wider understanding and agreement.

Peskov stated, “One needs patience in this matter.”

Peskov stated that the ideas he has were discussed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump during a telephone conversation on Monday evening. “I would not say right now what the ideas are,” Peskov stated.

At the same time, Peskov said the recent discussion between Putin and Trump about the situation involving Iran does not mean that the Russian president has taken the role of a mediator in the settlement of the tensions in the Middle East involving Iran.

Peskov’s remarks underscored Moscow’s willingness to stay engaged in discussions over the crisis while denying that Putin has taken on a formal mediator role.

No further details were provided on Russia’s proposals or on whether any follow-up talks are planned.
