Lavrov and Araghchi discussed regional hostilities, nuclear issues and shipping passage during a May 1 phone call.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed prospects for ending hostilities and stabilizing the military and political situation in the Middle East during a May 1 phone call, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry said the discussion covered freedom of navigation, the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the safe passage of Russian ships and cargo through the Strait of Hormuz.

Russia expressed support for ongoing mediation efforts, according to the statement.

Lavrov and Araghchi also reaffirmed their readiness to support a political and diplomatic process aimed at reaching lasting agreements for long-term peace in the region, the ministry said.

The call followed Araghchi’s April 27, 2026, meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, according to the ministry.
