Rep. Steve Cohen said Tuesday that the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis appeared to be a “clearly unjustified homicide,” and urged federal authorities to turn over evidence to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison for an independent investigation the public can trust, Cohen’s office said.
Speaking during a House Judiciary Committee markup, the Tennessee Democrat said ICE agents have limited authority outside immigration enforcement and “had no right” to stop Good before she was shot and killed last week. He also condemned the Trump administration’s characterization of the 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three as a domestic terrorist.
Cohen said the shooter did not render aid after Good was wounded and instead drove away. “Law enforcement doesn’t drive off when someone’s been shot and is possibly dying. They try to render aid,” he said, according to his office.
Good was killed Jan. 7 during a confrontation in south Minneapolis as federal immigration enforcement activity drew protests and neighborhood scrutiny. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has described the incident as “domestic terrorism” and said the officer acted in self-defense, the Department of Homeland Security said.
Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has said it remains open to conducting a full investigation if federal investigators will share all evidence and reports, BCA said.
The Justice Department has also decided not to open a civil rights probe at this time, while an FBI investigation continues, The Associated Press reported.
