ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Minneapolis Woman as Officials Dispute DHS Account

Officials, witnesses and video accounts offered sharply different versions of the Jan. 7 confrontation that ended in Renee Good’s death.

A woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in south Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7, during a confrontation that erupted amid a federal immigration operation and community protests.

The woman’s mother identified her as Renee Nicole Good, 37, a Minneapolis resident, Star Tribune reported. Witnesses told the newspaper that agents were shouting for Good to get out of her vehicle as several officers crowded around the driver’s side.

Bystander video cited by Star Tribune shows Good’s SUV boxed in by agents. In the footage, the vehicle backs up a short distance and then moves forward. An agent appears to fire multiple rounds into the car. The agent who fired has not been identified, Star Tribune reported, and officials have not publicly released the name of the officer said to have been struck.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said an ICE officer fired in self-defense after being hit by the vehicle and described the incident as “domestic terrorism” . President Donald Trump also alleged the driver “viciously ran over” an ICE officer, though Star Tribune reported that several videos filmed by bystanders do not support that claim.

Noem said the officer was treated at a local hospital and released.

City and state leaders pushed back forcefully on the administration’s account. In a heated City Hall news conference, Mayor Jacob Frey told ICE to leave Minneapolis and apologized to Good’s family.

Gov. Tim Walz called the federal explanation “propaganda” and urged the public to watch the video,.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said he would pursue accountability and transparency.

Good’s family and neighbors described her as a devoted parent and an artist. Good was a mother, wife and poet who had recently moved to the neighborhood with her wife and 6-year-old son, reported by the New York Post. The New York Post reported that her mother, Donna Ganger, said Good was compassionate and “probably terrified” in her final moments. A neighbor said the family was new but warmly welcomed on the block, the New York Post reported.

The New York Post also reported that Good studied creative writing at Old Dominion University, was originally from Colorado Springs, and described herself online as a writer and poet. The outlet reported she was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

The shooting set off an emotional night in Minneapolis. Star Tribune reported that residents returned to the scene to light candles, hold a vigil and march through the neighborhood, with chanting continuing late into the evening. More demonstrations were planned for the next day, including an early morning protest at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling and a late afternoon gathering at Lake Street and Chicago Avenue, Star Tribune reported.

In Washington, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois said she planned to pursue impeachment proceedings against Noem, calling the episode “impeachable” in a statement.
