At least eight people were killed and more than a dozen injured after a car exploded near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in New Delhi on Monday evening, according to ANI. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and authorities have cordoned off the area.
The blast occurred around 6:52 p.m. when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a traffic signal, ANI reported. The explosion ignited nearby cars and triggered a fire that was contained after emergency crews arrived. Delhi Fire Services said multiple units were dispatched following a call received around 7 p.m.
Victims were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital. A hospital official said 15 people were brought in; eight were dead on arrival, three were in critical condition, and one was stable, ANI said.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said all relevant agencies—including forensic teams and national investigators—were on site and examining evidence. The Delhi Police Special Cell has taken charge of the scene, and security has been heightened across sensitive locations. Neighboring Uttar Pradesh placed all districts on alert as a precaution, ANI reported.
Eyewitnesses described a deafening blast, shattered windows, and burning vehicles. Investigators have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, and officials said it is too early to draw conclusions while evidence is being processed. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and follow official advisories.
