Powerball Jackpot Soars to $1.7 Billion, Third Largest in U.S. History

Third-largest U.S. lottery prize with a $770.3M cash option; Virginia sees a $1M Manassas win and multiple $50K prizes. Next Powerball drawing is Saturday, Sept. 6, 10:59 p.m. ET.

The Powerball jackpot is now worth almost $1.7 billion, making it the third-largest lottery reward in US history. The huge jackpot is worth about $770.3 million in cash.

Virginia Lottery officials say that the current jackpot is only behind the world record $2.04 billion Powerball prize that was won in California in 2022. Players have another chance to win life-changing prizes in Saturday’s drawing.

This week, people who play the lottery in Manassas had a reason to celebrate when a $1 million winning ticket was sold at the Wawa convenience shop at 704 Sudley Road. The Virginia Lottery says that the ticket matched all five white ball numbers but not the red Powerball number in the drawing on Monday.

Two more Virginia gamers were able to win with the Virginia Lottery mobile app. According to lottery officials, the tickets matched four of the first five winning numbers and the Powerball number, which meant they each won $50,000.

Those four tickets each matched four of the first five winning numbers plus the Powerball number. They were bought at:
    • Elk Creek Country Store, 5224 Kentucky Springs Road, Bumpass
    • Stop In Food Store, 856 Burks Hill Road, Bedford
    • Wawa, 9471 Liberia Avenue, Manassas
    • Online using the Virginia Lottery app

Winners came from many states in the Monday night lottery. Eleven tickets from all throughout the country matched all five white ball numbers to win $1 million each. Powerball authorities say that the winning tickets worth $1 million were sold in California (2), Colorado, Florida, Georgia (2), Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

Virginia Lottery said that all lottery proceeds made in the state, including sales of Powerball tickets, go directly to funding K–12 education. The Virginia Lottery says that so far this fiscal year, it has raised more over $901 million, which is almost 10% of the state’s total K–12 school budget.

More than 5,300 Virginia Lottery outlets across the state sell Powerball tickets. Players can also buy them through the Virginia Lottery mobile app. At 10:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, the drawings take place.

Players will have another chance to win the historic jackpot in the next Powerball drawing, which is set for Saturday, September 6. When jackpots reach record-breaking levels, ticket sales usually go up a lot. Many first-time players join regular players in the hunt for the huge reward.
