Three Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies were injured Wednesday night while attempting to serve a warrant and protective order in Gretna, according to a report from WDBJ7.
Initial reports suggested the deputies had been shot. However, the Sheriff’s Office later clarified that while they were met with gunfire at a residence on Blue Jay Lane, the deputies were struck by shrapnel. One deputy was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
The Pittsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said James Andru Lehnerd was arrested and will face charges. A SWAT team was called in due to challenges in removing the injured deputies from the home.
Heavy Law Enforcement Presence
Virginia State Police will lead the investigation into the shooting. A WDBJ7 reporter at the scene described a “very heavy scene at the intersection of Pittsville Road and Homestead Road in Pittsylvania County.”
Responding agencies included the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Danville Police Department, Virginia State Police, Gretna Fire and Rescue, Hurt Fire Department, U.S. Marshals, and Centra Helicopter, with additional units arriving during the evening.
