French authorities searched the offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X on Tuesday as part of a Paris cybercrime investigation that concluded in January 2025. The French authorities issued summonses to Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino for voluntary interviews in Paris on April 20, 2026, as per an official statement issued by the Office of the Public Prosecutor—Paris.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said the search was carried out with France’s National Cyber Unit (UNCyber) and in the presence of Europol representatives. The prosecutors also stated that X employees will be called as witnesses during the April 20-24 period. The voluntary interviews will enable the leaders of the social media platform to explain their position and, if necessary, outline how to align the social media platform with French law.
The investigation is also likely to fuel criticism of the policy of holding social media companies liable for content on their platforms and AI-generated content.
The prosecutors stated that the investigation began after two reports were received on January 12, 2025. The Paris prosecutor’s office delegated the investigation to the General Directorate of the National Gendarmerie on July 9, 2025. The investigation expanded after further reports were filed about Grok on X social media for spreading Holocaust denial content and sexually explicit deepfakes.
The statement also contains a list of offenses such as complicity in the possession and organized dissemination of child sexual abuse images, sexually explicit deepfakes, and Holocaust denial content. The offenses also include organized fraudulent data extraction and manipulation of automated data processing systems and operating an illegal online platform as part of an organized group.
