    Pakistan, Afghanistan Agree to Immediate Ceasefire After Deadly Border Clashes

    The agreement halts border hostilities and sets a path for follow-up talks in Istanbul under Qatari and Turkish mediation.

    Pakistan and Afghanistan reached an immediate ceasefire agreement Sunday during negotiations in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Türkiye, officials from both nations and mediators announced.

    Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif confirmed the ceasefire through social media, stating the neighboring countries will respect each other’s territorial boundaries. The delegations plan to meet again Oct. 25 in Istanbul for further discussions, Asif said.

    Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Afghan interim government, confirmed the deal, stating that talks between representatives from both countries ended with an agreement. Mujahid said that all sides agreed to the accords and reiterated their commitment to peace, mutual respect, and good neighborly relations.

    The agreement prohibits that neither side can attack the other side’s population, security personnel, or infrastructure. A third-party country will set up a system to check claims and make sure that the ceasefire terms are followed in the future.

    Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the agreement finalized late Saturday night in Doha, calling it “the first step in the right direction.” Dar praised Qatar and Türkiye for their roles in facilitating the negotiations and called for continued efforts to prevent further loss of life.

    Mujahid expressed Kabul’s appreciation to both mediating nations for their assistance in the talks.

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs – State of Qatar said the two sides agreed to establish mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability. Follow-up meetings will take place in the coming days to ensure reliable and sustainable implementation of the ceasefire, the ministry added.

    Qatar expressed hope the agreement would end border tensions between the two countries and establish a foundation for regional stability.

    Türkiye welcomed the outcome and said it would continue supporting efforts to solidify the truce between the “two brotherly countries.” Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    Last week, tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan along their border grew, leading to international involvement to stop further fighting.
