Packers vs Commanders Week 2: 27–18 at Lambeau

Defense sets the tone as Green Bay moves to 2-0 on Thursday night.

The Packers moved to 2–0 with a 27–18 victory over Washington on Thursday Night Football, riding another relentless defensive night and two marathon first-half touchdown drives at Lambeau Field.

Green Bay’s defense kept Washington out of the end zone for three quarters, survived multiple short fields, and forced two long missed field goals before the game tightened late. The Packers finished with four sacks and 12 quarterback hits, holding dual-threat rookie Jayden Daniels to 17 rushing yards as Washington managed just 51 on the ground. “Relentless,” Head Coach Matt LaFleur said of his unit’s play, as quoted by Packers.com.

The offense provided the cushion with something rare: for the first time in LaFleur’s tenure, Green Bay produced two 90-plus-yard touchdown marches, both in the first half, to build a 14–0 lead. Explosive plays set the tone — a 57-yard catch-and-run by tight end Tucker Kraft before a Romeo Doubs score, and a 37-yard toe-tap by Malik Heath to set up Josh Jacobs’ rushing TD, his franchise-record 10th straight game with a touchdown.

Quarterback Jordan Love stayed aggressive and mistake-free, finishing 19 of 31 for 292 yards and two touchdowns (113.9 rating). “I’m going to be an aggressive quarterback… I love taking shots downfield,” Love said, as quoted by Packers.com.

Washington cut the deficit to 17–10 early in the fourth on a 20-yard TD to Zach Ertz, but Green Bay answered with a nine-play, 65-yard drive capped by Kraft’s touchdown. The series featured a direct snap to rookie Savion Williams for 16 and an end-around to fellow rookie Matthew Golden for nine. Brandon McManus then drilled a 56-yarder for a 27–10 edge with 6:42 left, enough to withstand a late Commanders push.

Kraft authored his first 100-yard game (six catches, 124 yards, TD) while corner Keisean Nixon broke up five passes — a career best — repeatedly erasing downfield shots. “Keisean Nixon was playing his butt off out there,” LaFleur said, as quoted by Packers.com. Nixon’s five pass breakups were reflected in the box score.

Injury note: LaFleur confirmed WR Jayden Reed suffered a broken collarbone on a nullified early touchdown catch. “He’ll be down for quite some time… I would expect him back at some point this season,” LaFleur said, as quoted by Packers.com.

By the numbers: Love 19–31, 292 yards, 2 TDs; Jacobs 23 carries, 84 yards, TD; Kraft six receptions, 124 yards, TD. For Washington, Daniels went 24–42 for 200 yards and two fourth-quarter TDs, but the run game never found daylight. Final: Packers 27, Commanders 18. Green Bay 2–0; Washington 1–1.
