Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Thursday he discussed plans for an upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call with Trump.
“I just got off the phone with President Trump. Preparations for the USA-Russia peace summit are underway. Hungary is the island of PEACE!” Orbán wrote on X.
Orbán didn’t share what else came up in the conversation or offer specifics about how preparations are moving forward.
His announcement followed Trump’s phone call with Putin earlier in the day. Trump called the exchange “very productive” and said the two leaders agreed to meet in person, according to Virginia Times.
“At the conclusion of the call, we agreed that there will be a meeting of our high-level advisors next week. The United States’ initial meetings will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, together with various other people, to be designated. A meeting location is to be determined,” Trump said.
Trump said he plans to meet Putin in Budapest to talk about ending what he described as the “inglorious” war between Russia and Ukraine.
People close to Putin have indicated a Budapest summit is possible. Orbán called the potential meeting “great news for the peace-loving people of the world” and said Hungary is prepared to host.
The Trump-Putin call happened before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s expected trip to Washington.
