OpenAI on Tuesday shut down the Sora app. In a brief statement posted by Sora Team on X, it wrote that it was “saying goodbye” to the platform and thanking people who created, shared, and built a community around it.
The statement did not give a shutdown date or explain why the app is being discontinued. It said more information would be shared soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on how users can preserve their work.
OpenAI also acknowledged that the news would be disappointing for users, saying the content made with Sora “mattered.” The message was signed by “The Sora Team.”
OpenAI has not yet publicly outlined the next steps for users beyond saying more information is coming.
Some advocacy groups, researchers, and digital safety experts criticized OpenAI’s Sora app after it came out in September. They said that AI video that is easy to make may be exploited to make nonconsensual material and deepfakes that look real. Some critics have said that these kinds of gadgets could help disseminate dangerous content and make people want to surf through social media all the time.
