The White House said Tuesday it will not permit Nvidia to sell its most advanced “Blackwell” artificial-intelligence chips to China at this time, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters. The position was delivered during a briefing.
Leavitt said President Donald Trump’s stance is clear, following his weekend remarks that the most cutting-edge Nvidia chips should be reserved for U.S. customers and barred from sale to China and other countries. Trump also indicated the chip issue was not raised in his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea, Reuters reported.
The latest statement leaves open questions about earlier signals that a reduced-performance Blackwell variant might be allowed for export. In August, Trump suggested the possibility of scaled-down chips for China, as Reuters has noted, but the White House message Tuesday underscores that the top-tier Blackwell remains off-limits “at this time.”
