Nepal’s Human Rights Commission Urges PM Oli to Ensure Peaceful Strike

NHRC urges restraint, responsible protest, and protection of public rights during Nepal’s upcoming national strike.

    Key Points

    • NHRC appeals for a peaceful and lawful protest on Jestha 15, 2082.
    • Urges government and security forces to act with restraint and uphold public safety.
    • Warns media against sensationalism and calls for responsible reporting.
    • Highlights the importance of freedom of expression and assembly.

As political tensions rise ahead of a planned nationwide strike on Jestha 15, 2082 (May 28, 2025), the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC) has released a public statement urging all participants to uphold peace and ensure public safety.

The strike, initiated by the Joint Struggle Committee of the United Political Movement, is intended to address various political grievances. However, the NHRC has voiced concern over potential threats to law and order and the rights of ordinary citizens.

“The commission calls on all individuals and groups to exercise their rights in a peaceful and responsible manner… It is essential to ensure the protection of human rights during the protest.” — NHRC Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel

Reaffirming the citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, the NHRC emphasized that these liberties must be exercised without jeopardizing public order. The appeal comes at a time of heightened uncertainty, where the potential for unrest is significant.

Call for Responsible Action by Authorities

The NHRC has also called on the government and security agencies to manage the situation responsibly. “Authorities must act with restraint and uphold the dignity of citizens while managing public security,” read the statement.

Security forces have previously been criticized for the use of force during public demonstrations, prompting the NHRC to issue strong warnings regarding human rights compliance and the proportionality of actions taken.

    Media Responsibility & Public Dialogue

Moreover, the commission has urged the media sector to refrain from sensationalizing the event. “Media houses should avoid any inflammatory rhetoric that could further provoke unrest,” the statement added, highlighting the media’s role in shaping public perception during politically charged times.

The NHRC’s remarks also encourage all parties—including political leaders, organizers, and civil society—to foster constructive dialogue and de-escalation, rather than confrontation.

A Timely Reminder Amid Political Volatility

As Nepal continues to navigate complex political dynamics, this statement from the NHRC is a timely reminder that the protection of democratic values depends on both active civic engagement and a commitment to peace and accountability.

The commission reiterated its ongoing role in monitoring developments and called for the cooperation of all citizens to safeguard human rights during this crucial time.
