Newsom Says He Was Barred From USA House at Davos After Alleged White House Pressure

Newsom’s office points to alleged federal pressure; USA House and Fortune roles remain disputed.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he was denied access to USA House at Davos this week, an action that his administration claims is due to pressure from the White House and Department of State, although this fact hasn’t been independently confirmed.

A message uploaded onto Newsom’s X account by his press team said that Fortune had been invited by USA House for a “press fireside chat,” and that he had tried to enter USA House to attend. The message also said that federal officials had blocked him from entering, although no documents were attached showing that federal officials were involved. There was no confirmation by the White House or State Department. Governor Newsom Press Office

However, the governor struck back on social media by posting the following message: “How weak and pathetic do you have to be to be this scared of a fireside chat?” Gavin Newsom

The USA House, a privately created structure in Davos that hosts government officials, entrepreneurs, and media, according to its own page, “does not represent the U.S. government and does not organize official government programming.” USA House

Fortune verified that Newsom’s invite had been acknowledged but that USA House had been unable to allow him to participate when it came down to it, as reported by a KCRA article. There was no specified reason for their decision. KCRA

The incident is occurring during a hectic Davos week, during which time Newsom, an ardent Democrat and staunch critic of U.S. President Donald Trump—a fellow Republican—has been engaging with reporters since Mr. Trump last spoke, while addressing what he believes is too soft of an approach for European officials on issues requested by the U.S. government, such as Greenland.

The claim was not commented on by the White House. Instead, Anna Kelly, the spokesperson, launched a personal attack against Newsom and said to CBS News Sacramento, “No one in Davos knows who third-rate governor Newscum is or why he is frolicking around Switzerland instead of fixing the many problems he created in California.” CBS News Sacramento

There was, however, no announcement of evidence supporting the statement made by Newsom’s office, nor was there any statement made confirming federal involvement.
