The United States deported 75 Nepali nationals — including six women — and flew them to Kathmandu on a chartered aircraft on Thursday, Dec. 18, in what Nepali officials described as the largest single-day return of Nepalis from the U.S., according to myRepublica.
The group arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport and was handed over to Nepal Police’s anti-human trafficking unit for standard screening and questioning, myRepublica reported. Authorities normally ask returnees how they reached the United States and whether they were cheated or coerced by agents involved in illegal migration.
The deportations come amid tighter U.S. immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s second term, according to myRepublica. The outlet reported that a total of 463 Nepalis have been deported since Trump took office on Jan. 20, 2025.
Onlinekhabar report said that most of the Nepalis who were deported had entered the US through illegal means. A smaller number were accused of overstaying their visas or losing their legal status.
Large, chartered deportation flights are not unprecedented. Earlier this year, 37 Nepalis deported from the United States arrived in Kathmandu on a chartered flight, reported by Setopati.
