VT Staff | Kathmandu: Nepal’s Supreme Court said many important documents from Nepal’s judicial history have been nearly destroyed.
Statement on Recent Attacks on Courts
“We express deep sorrow over the damage caused to court buildings due to arson, stone-pelting, vandalism, and looting that occurred on 2082.05.24 (Nepali calendar) at the Supreme Court and other courts across the country,” the statement reads. “The courts, which serve as centers of public trust, have suffered unimaginable losses—including destruction of vital documents, equipment, and vehicles—due to these acts of arson and destructive attacks.”
Loss of Judicial Records
The Supreme Court has stated that many important documents from Nepal’s judicial history have been nearly destroyed. The statement continues:
“Even in such dire circumstances, we remain committed to fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to the judiciary by Nepal’s Constitution. Upholding the sovereignty vested in the people, constitutionalism, rule of law, and the guarantee of fundamental rights, we pledge to resume court operations as soon as possible—regardless of the situation—so that we may continue to serve the public’s expectations for justice with unwavering determination.”
The Supreme Court has said that it will begin registering and regularly hearing habeas corpus petitions starting Sunday, the 29th. This decision was made during an emergency full bench meeting held today.
Context: Gen-Z Protests
The arson attacks on the Supreme Court and other courts occurred during the Gen-Z protests.
The Health Ministry’s tally report shows that at least 30 people have died and 1,033 have been injured during the Gen-Z-led protests. 713 of the injured have been released from the hospital. The health minitry reported that 253 more people were admitted Wednesday and 55 patients were sent to other places for specialized care.
The youth-led Gen-Z movement accelerated amid widespread anger over corruption, heavy security crackdowns, and poor governance. Violence, arson, and vandalism have been reported across Kathmandu and other major cities in recent days. Local officials and hospitals have confirmed multiple deaths and hundreds of injuries as demonstrations intensified. Government buildings and the homes of senior politicians have been attacked, while Nepal Army has been patrolling, curfew imposed and heightened security measures were enforced in parts of the capital.
