Only a small percentage of the more than 13,114 prisoners who escaped from prisons across the country during recent civil unrest were successfully recaptured, leaving prison officials to deal with a serious security crisis. 11,868 inmates remain at large after 1,298 fugitives were either apprehended or contacted by the authorities, according to data gathered by the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC).
At the height of the unrest, breakouts took place in 35 districts across juvenile rehabilitation centers and correctional facilities, according to INSEC report. The attempts at escape were fatal. According to officials, 25 people were injured and nine people died during the breakouts. In the midst of the chaos, the deaths happened as prisoners tried to escape overcrowded facilities.
The result has been a sharp decline in the number of inmates. Only 4,895 of the 16,797 prisoners who were incarcerated in the impacted juvenile and correctional facilities prior to the incidents are still there. One of the biggest jail breaks in the nation’s history is represented by the mass exodus. Based on reports from field representatives in the impacted districts, INSEC published detailed statistics on Friday.
Before the disruptions started, many facilities were running far above capacity, which might have made the mass escapes easier. Large-scale manhunts have been conducted by law enforcement to find the missing inmates.
