    (UPDATE) Nepal’s Gen-G Protests Leave 19 Dead; 347 More Injured, Calls Grow to Lift Social Media Ban

    Death toll rises to 19 with 347 injured as hospitals report casualties; opposition urges lifting the social media ban and seeks accountability.

    The death toll from the Gen-G protests on Monday has reached 19. According to the details received by the Ministry of Health and Population from various hospitals across the country, the death toll has reached 19.

    Similarly, 347 injured people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals across the country, according to the health authorities.

    The Ministry of Health has stated that 3 people died at the Civil Hospital in Kathmandu, 8 at the National Trauma Center, 3 at Everest Hospital, 2 at KMC Hospital, 1 at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, and 2 at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.

    The protest of ‘Gen-G’ (the generation born between 1997 and 2012) has reached the streets digitally in protest of the government’s ban on social media and corruption. They are demonstrating in major cities of the country, including Kathmandu, today.

    Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to immediately lift the ban on social media.

    After the meeting of the Nepali Congress office bearers, President Deuba also urged Prime Minister Oli to immediately revoke the directive regulating the use of social media.

    Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak is preparing to resign after 17 people died in Kathmandu and two in Itahari, and more than 300 were injured in the Gen-G protests on Monday.

    In the meeting of the Nepali Congress office bearers, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma had demanded their resignation on moral grounds.

    The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has warned of a public protest against the current government. General Secretary Kavindra Burlakoti has issued a statement condemning the government’s repression of the Gen-G protest on Monday.

    The RSS has said, ‘The people will no longer tolerate the attempt to prolong misrule by soaking in the blood of their own children, and the outcome will be a public protest against the tyrannical regime.’ The RSS has also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and a fresh mandate (early election).
