Nepal swears in two more ministers to interim cabinet

Dr. Sudha Sharma and Bablu Gupta take oath, completing ten-member interim cabinet under Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

VT Staff, Kathmandu: Nepal added two ministers to its interim government on Sunday afternoon, as President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office at Sheetal Niwas to Dr. Sudha Sharma as Minister for Health and Population and Bablu Gupta as Minister for Youth and Sports, according to the Office of the President of Nepal (official statement).

The appointments expand Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s cabinet to 10 members. The President’s Office noted that Sharma previously served as a government secretary, while Gupta is a social activist.

The interim cabinet has been assembled in phases under Karki’s leadership. On Bhadra 30 (mid-September), Rameshwor Khanal was appointed Finance Minister; Kulman Ghising was given Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development; and Omprakash Aryal took charge of Home Affairs as well as Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the statement said.

Earlier in late September, four additional ministers joined the lineup: Mahabir Pun as Minister for Education, Science and Technology; Anil Kumar Sinha as Minister for Industry, Commerce, Supplies and Land Reform; Madan Pariyar as Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development; and Jagdish Kharel as Minister for Communication and Information Technology.

Sunday’s swearing-in formalizes leadership over the health and youth-sports portfolios as the interim administration continues standing up key ministries. Further adjustments remain possible as the government organizes day-to-day operations under the interim framework, the President’s Office added.
