NATO Security Committee Meets in Bratislava to Strengthen Classified Information Sharing

A three-day NATO forum in Bratislava focused on shoring up rules and practices for sharing classified information with partners.

NATO said on Saturday that security officials from NATO and partner countries gathered in Bratislava this week to make it harder for the Alliance and its allies to share secret information.

The NATO Security Committee met for three days from September 17 to 19. The NATO Security Committee had representatives from over 60 countries and international organizations, NATO said.

The NATO Office of Security, which is part of the Joint Intelligence and Security Division, and Slovakia’s National Security Authority worked together to plan the event. Delegations looked at how things were done in different places, spoke about common problems, and made plans to make the rules for safe information exchange stronger.

Galen J. Nace, who is the Director of the NATO Office of Security and the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Security, led the meeting and said that partnerships are a way to make things happen faster. He noted that “partnerships make the Alliance stronger” and that the purpose is to protect “people, information, systems, and facilities” while allowing timely interactions that help everyone reach their goals.

NATO said that the Security Committee is the North Atlantic Council’s main source of advice on security issues. It also said that the Bratislava meetings were focused on making procedures more secure and working better with non-member partners who regularly work with NATO missions and headquarters.

There were no concrete policy choices made, but officials said the meeting was part of a larger effort to make protections more uniform and fill any holes that can happen when several countries and organizations communicate sensitive data quickly.
