SWAT Search Near Missing Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson Neighborhood Detains 3- Report

Three people were detained during a SWAT search near the Tucson-area neighborhood where Nancy Guthrie disappeared, officials said.

A SWAT team executed a search warrant Friday night at a home near the Tucson-area neighborhood where Nancy Guthrie disappeared, detaining three people as investigators pressed a fast-moving lead in the case, NewsNation reported.

The operation unfolded at two scenes. NewsNation reported deputies ordered two people—a woman and a man, described as possibly a mother and son—to come out of a residence near Guthrie’s neighborhood, and both complied. At the same time, a third person, a man, was detained during a nearby traffic stop. NewsNation reported that the driver was heading towards the property being searched.

Just before 1 a.m. Eastern, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed “law enforcement activity” was underway near East Orange Grove Road and North First Avenue and said no additional details would be released “at the request of the FBI” because it is a joint investigation.

The sheriff’s office also pushed back on online speculation, saying reports that the activity involved a home belonging to a former county attorney were not accurate, according to the agency’s statements on X.

The location for the search is approximately 1.9 miles away from Guthrie’s home, according to the report from NewsNation. Several FBI vehicles were also spotted arriving at the location as the scene was being secured.

Authorities have not announced arrests or identified any suspects. NewsNation quoted retired homicide detective Chris McDonough saying a detention is not the same as an arrest and can allow investigators to conduct interviews and gather evidence without formally taking someone into custody.

Residents who are observing the police activity described it as “unbelievably absurd,” according to the report from NewsNation, which quoted Peter Molk, who said the police activity was causing people to become “nervous.”

No overnight media briefing was expected, the sheriff’s department said, and a statement in writing would be provided.

Earlier Friday, NewsNation reported a sheriff’s airplane was spotted in the air, and a mobile command center was seen leaving the sheriff’s office as the search effort intensified.
