Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an AI-generated online encyclopedia positioned as a rival to Wikipedia, going live on Oct. 27 with roughly 885,000 entries, according to AP News. The project, built by Musk’s xAI, is pitched as delivering “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” following years of public friction between Musk and Wikipedia over perceived bias.
At launch, Grokipedia relies on automated writing and limits direct editing; users can suggest corrections, but articles aren’t openly editable. Early reviews said some pages appear adapted from Wikipedia and are sparsely sourced compared with the volunteer-edited site, reported by The Verge. AP News noted several entries include disclaimers indicating material was adapted from Wikipedia under a Creative Commons license.
The Wikimedia Foundation defended Wikipedia’s human-written, community-moderated model and emphasized transparency in sourcing and revisions, according to NPR. Subsequent media comparisons highlighted differences in tone on politically sensitive topics and flagged accuracy concerns during Grokipedia’s version “0.1” debut. The Verge and AP News each said the platform’s editorial process and quality controls remain only partially explained.
Musk has long criticized Wikipedia and mainstream outlets for alleged ideological bias and has urged followers not to donate to Wikipedia. What changes next will hinge on how quickly Grokipedia clarifies licensing compliance, expands citations, and handles corrections at scale, NPR reported
