Mumbai Police Ask Actor Imran Khan to Leave India After Protest

The OCI card holder was detained with about 400 others at the Oct. 10 August Kranti Maidan demonstration before police issued the notice.

Mumbai police have told actor Imran Khan to leave India by Oct. 28, NDTV reported. The notice came days after he joined a protest called by the satirical group Cockroach Janta Party.

Khan, whose uncle is Bollywood star Aamir Khan, is a U.S. citizen, according to NDTV. He has an Overseas Citizen of India card but does not hold Indian citizenship.

“Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen,” police said, in a notice.

The outlet reported that the notice was issued under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Section 7 gives India’s central government authority to regulate, restrict or prohibit foreigners’ entry, departure, presence and movement.

Before the notice, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya had approached Mumbai police seeking charges against Khan. He accused the actor of joining an “illegal political agitation” and “violating OCI provisions and visa conditions.”

Khan attended the Oct. 10 demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan also attended.

Police detained all three and later released them, NDTV reported. About 400 people were detained during the protest, including members of the Tushar Gandhi-led organization Hum Bharat Ke Log and activists from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), according to the outlet.

Khan posted a photograph from inside a police van with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

In one video cited by NDTV, he said “Jai Hind” to officers. In another, Khan said he did not know why police had detained him. He said officers put people into vans and drove them around for about two hours before releasing them.

Speaking to reporters about his attendance, Khan said he had no specific demands and had come as someone who lived in Mumbai.

“I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed? That is why I am here,”
